More face painting photos!... again

Health And Safety

How do we ensure that our equipment is safe to use on all people? What the correct procedure to use when painting somebody's face? These are some of the questions we have asked ourselves to ensure we are carrying everything out properly.

Here's some text I wrote and edited for clarity here, so I can better explain how we cover ourselves.

  • Paints – Are the paints used suitable for people with sensitive skin or allergies? Yes they are. The paints owned by the charity (Aqua) have been very reliable, and have been used before several times. We were concerned that their age might be an issue, but we tested them on ourselves and they were fine. The paints we purchased on Amazon (Snazaroo) are very popular and used by many face painters. All the paints we use
  • Cleanliness – Equipment cleaned regularly and thoroughly. We try to wash our paintbrushes, paints and sponges after every session.
  • Explain to the client what you are doing – clear explanation, especially with children. Young children may feel unsure about what you are doing, as having paints put on their faces isn't natural. Keeping them informed about what you are doing helps keep the customer happy.
  • Give an idea of how long the procedure will take. Sometimes facepainting can take a while to do. Telling them how long it will take is a wise idea, especially for very impatient customers
  • I have recently attended first aid training, so I know how to spot an allergic reaction, among other things.

"Sparkling Faces" correspondence - Not a good resonse :(

Got a reply, and it's bad news I'm afraid! Below is the e-mail I got back, and below that is the e-mail I sent:

Hi Emma,
thank you so much for the compliment, however I will have to decline.
I'm just super buy right now, and this project sounds like alot more work than I have time to offer.
There are alot of great face painters out there that may be able to assist you in your research,
and I do wish you the best of luck!
thanks

Comment: Hey there!

Before I start, I would like to say how talented you are at painting faces. You make it an art form, and it is really inspiring seeing you work.

I am an animation student at Ravensbourne College in London, and I am currently working on a unit where we have to set up a business in order to make money for our end of year degree show, and display our artistic talents.

Me and a friend have chosen to do face painting. As I was browsing the internet for inspiration, I found your "Sparkling Faces" YouTube videos. And that is how I have come about writing to you now.

For our project, we have been asked to research people who have similarly started a business in order to get an income and make themselves known. I was hoping that maybe I could write about you and your business. Would that be okay? I would need to ask you a few questions about how you operate etc like how the business started, and how you advertise and look for events to set up your facepainting stall, and how you decide on what fees to negotiate with clients.

Sorry about the long e-mail! Anyway, if you could reply asap that would be really great. Thank you for taking the time to read my e-mail, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Kind regards,

Emma Wyton

I'm a bit gutted, really. I guess it shows that she's got a lot of work though, which is a good thing. I might try and e-mail somebody else. :/

More face painting photos!

"Sparkling Faces" correspondence

I've just sent an e-mail to the lady in charge of Sparkling Faces. Unfortunately I lost the text I wrote because I forgot to copy and paste it here, but it was basically just a kind e-mail asking permission to research her company.

On the website it says she will reply within 24hrs, so fingers-crossed I will get a good response!

Our work so far!

We have done some mean facepaints and have made a bit of money. We have profited around £8 for our work commissioned from other people. If we deduct the money paid for the extra paints and wipes (which comes to £15approx) we have a profit of minus £7

Supplies bought:

Bright Pink Paint   £2.84
Sky Blue Paint       £2.99
Lilac/Purple Paint  £3.67
Turquoise Paint     £2.80
                         =   £12.30
Postage and Packaging
                         =   £2.15
TOTAL            =   £14.45

So that's the money we've spent

Here are some pics of some happy customers!

Me and Mel have also successfully secured some events to go to, in order to get some more money. My Dad's school has a Summer Fayre every year, and up to 3,000 people come to enjoy the stalls and stuff on offer. I talked to the guy in charge (Keith Burden) and he said he'd love to have us there. This'll be the first time they'll have face painters at the fayre, so I think it's going to be a hit!

Mel has contacted a friend who needs somebody to paint the faces of some dancers soon, so we might be involved with that too!

It's all pretty exciting! I still need to do a little research into Health and Safety and general business managing. I hope to e-mail a professional face painter today, so expect to see that soon!

Partica!

Here's a site that Mel mentioned. She's gonna take a look at the stuff and the prices, to see if it is worth investing in them for paints.

Tutor's e-mail

I got a reply about the face painting! Here's what my tutor said,

Hi Emma

If it's a one off thing that you guys are planning it seems better to borrow some kit from your friends to try...  35-70£ seems dear to me. As regards to stall I assume you will be organising permission? You do know that to use the square outside Ravensbourne you need a licence/ permission from Lendlease. It is a bit of a process because they are a massive company.

I'm sure your family and friends will enjoy the face paint.

PS. If I were you I would test trade on Friday by offering some Royalist facepainting! I reckon there's big money to be made if you go about it in a clever way;) I just saw cheap kits of red blue and white face paint at Tesco

Best regards, L

Excellent stuff! I think my tutor Linnéa made some great points there. It makes me think that i should probably borrow equipment for now, because that way I can practice more.

I thought getting permission to have a stall on 02 grounds might be complicated. I was prepared for that. I'm sure with a bit of preparation and communication with the people in charge, we will be able to set up a nice stall for our business!

Also a valid point about the royal wedding on Friday. Might be a good opportunity to coax some patriotic people into having their faces painted with the british flag! Have forward this message on to my group members for their thoughts.

I should also mention that I may be getting help with the face painting. Mariluz Noto might be joining us! I'll let you know if the group does change or whatever.

Gorgeous Face Painting How To Vids!

I have found some cracking video tutorials on facepainting, mostly by the person who runs the "Sparkling Faces"

http://www.sparklingfaces.net/

Here are some favourite tutorials she has done that I would like to share with you, and hopefully master myself.

She gives a really good demonstration of how to do some really appealing painted faces.

She also shows how to make "rainbow cakes" which give a nice multi-coloured stripe effect with brush strokes

Where to get the face painting goods, and some button designs

Okay, I have a few options to choose from, but I'm not sure which decision would be best. It depends on money, and what our course leaders think at the moment. Here's an e-mail I sent to one of the unit tutors about this. I haven't had a reply yet, but I will upload it in my next post when I get it.

Hey there Linnéa Dimitriou!

I have a question to ask about my specific idea for the project. Basically, I am part of a group who are offering several different things on a stall, and my skill I shall be sharing is facepainting. I figured it is something that is quite unique, and will attract younger children to our stall, and in doing so, parents as well! Also, because it is almost Summer, it is something that should potentially attract a lot of customers.

However, I'm not sure whether there is a restriction on how I get my supplies. I know of a charity called River Drama run by some people I know very well, that has some very professional paints and equipment. I have been told that I can offer a donation in exchange for using the paints. I could also buy a whole set for my future use, but that could cost me £35-£70 on Amazon.

What advice do you have for me? I want to get the paints asap so I can start practising (on some of my family and friends, lucky them! Haha!)

Thank you, I hope to hear from you very soon!

I have also checked out some facepainting artists on the interwebs for some further research. I would really like to try and do some more professional designs then the ones I have done before, because I feel that I have mastered the general techniques enough. I will post the special designs in a different post, but here's some informative vids that show important tools I will need.

One other thing, I have designed some button ideas in my sketchbook today. I tried to come up with as many universal ideas as possible, so that they provide for a range of different people.

Sorry about the slightly raw quality, I quickly photoboothed this image XD

My Interests For this Unit - Facepainting

Since Summer is fast approaching, I wanted to think of things that would appeal to people more because of the season. I was trying to think of what is popular at Summer Fairs and stalls you'd come across at conventions. One thing I thought of straightaway was Face Painting!

At the creche I work at part-time, I have been asked many times to do odd face painting jobs, because they recognized my artistic skill. I really get a kick out of it, and it requires little preparation to do. All that's required are the paint, mirror, wipes, water, and a bit of know-how!

Here's a book that I have used a lot to do some really nice painted faces.
I don't always need to rely on the book either. I'm pretty good at improvising! I was once asked to paint a Ben 10 logo on a little boy's hand. Not easy, but I like a challenge!

I think this is a great way to appeal to children who are out with their parents. I also think that this will keep people at our stall longer, so that the rest of the family can look at what else is on offer, whilst their child gets a nice tiger or butterfly painted on them!

An Introduction

Pasted directly from the E+E Rave intranet home page.

E&E LEVEL 3: MAKING IT HAPPEN
SESSION 1: Introduction

Last year, you came up with a 'pretend' business plan that you pitched in a 'Dragons' Den' type set up. In level 3 you will instead do something very hands-on. Again, you will look at trends and do market research but this time you will use these insights to design and produce actual products and services.Your task is to create something that will bring you revenue, an enterprise related to your discipline or interests.

Whatever enterprise you decide to work on, it:
- Should potentially bring revenue (or a confirmed purchase order) before the end of the course (so no abstract businesses)
- Be approved at Formative Assessments
- Be presented in a professional manner and be representative of you as a creative professional: ideally it will be a useful addition to your portfolio or CV so don't waste the opportunity.

 ....

As soon as you have come up with a business idea and have decided whether to work on your own or in a group, you will write a brief project plan based on the project plan template below to include time line and budget. This needs to be handed in by the 28th of April so that the we can assign a tutor/assessor to you for Formative and Summative Assessments. At the end of the project you will use this initial project plan in order to analyse your endeavour and compare it with the actual results- you will discuss these with your tutor and fill out a project report. Perhaps you ended up with a completely different product or service having gained market insight? Maybe you surpassed your targets? Miscalculated the time needed for the tasks set?

So basically, all systems go!

I have already joined a jolly band of people to start the unit with. Me and my friends Michelle Vinall, Clym Smith, and Steve Pender have formed a mighty alliance. We have already hosted a meeting on Skype, in order to discuss which direction we should go in and what we should offer to get some dosh.

(I'm the goofy looking one on the bottom left. Michelle has a similar screenshot of the same meeting on her blog)

In a bit, I will post up the thoughts I've had about what we could do, and what I think I should specialize in.

A New Start, A New Beginning, A New Additional Project
